Our community is set aside from the hustle and bustle of coastal tourist areas, yet it is convenient to Florida’s famous theme parks, professional sports complexes, and the cities of St. To the North, IRB borders the prestigious upscale communities of Belleair Beach, Sand Key, and the famous Clearwater Beach. IRB connects to the mainland and the city of Largo via the Walsingham Bridge, near the center of town.
The western side offers stunning Gulf of Mexico beaches and residences. Its eastern side features canals, waterfront lounges/restaurants and a large Intracoastal Waterway frontage. Divided by Gulf Boulevard, the main thoroughfare, Indian Rocks Beach has two coasts. From our Nature Preserve, Art Center, and our parks, to our local museum and our sandy shores, IRB is recognized for its charming atmosphere and panoramic beaches. Today, Indian Rocks Beach is a thriving community that has maintained most of its original character and supports a lively mixture of recreational activities. After World War II, however, that growth accelerated at a rapid pace. The bridge helped bring in visitors and the community grew and developed during its early days. The first bridge connecting the mainland to IRB was built in 1916 and was located in an area known as the "Narrows." The exact spot is noted with an historical marker. Early settlers, seeing the Indians on their way to the "rock encircled spring" would say, "The Indians are on their way to the rocks." Legend has it that our town got its name when a native medicine man miraculously healed his chief with the waters from a natural sulfur spring believed to have been located in Kolb Park across from IRB City Hall. It is a beautiful barrier island community situated along the white sandy beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. Quiet Indian Rocks Beach (IRB) is a friendly small town of just over one square mile. The pavilion may be partially reserved by owners for private gatherings.
